FDA Approves New Anti-Depressant, Prestiq

On February 29th the Food and Drug Administration approved a new anti-depressant, Prestiq, made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Prestiq is a serotonin-norepinepherine re-uptake inhibitor (SNRI). According to Wyeth, the new anti-depressant takes a different pathway in the brain than Effexor does (which is also manufactured by Wyeth).

The FDA required Wyeth to conduct clinical trials with the new drug before they approved it. Wyeth conducted four eight-week clinical, double-blind studies where some participants received Prestiq and others received a placebo. Prestiq was shown to effectively treat the symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder.

According to Wyeth, the most common side-effects of Prestiq in clinical trials were sleepiness, dizziness, hyperhidosis, insomnia, nausea, male sexual dysfunction disorders, anxiety, decreased appetite, constipation, and anxiety.

The FDA has approved Prestiq for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adults only.

Prestiq will be available on the United States' market later this year.

For more information, you may visit Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

I just started taking Prestiq (50 mg)and I have noticed that one of the side effects is definately sleepiness, irratability and more depression. This could be that I was taking Effexor (150 mg) though.

I have been on Pristiq for almost three weeks, the first two weeks I lyed on the couch all day trying not to throw up. If I coughed, I threw up. Then they told me to cut it in half, the directions specifically told you not to cut, crush, ect...I told the doctor today to take me off, I also had a bad reaction years ago when I took Effexor, so why did she put me on it. Get off of it asap, I have never been this sick in my entire life and if the nurse and doctor do not know what they are talking about, get of off it faster.

I started taking Prestiq 5 days ago at 50 mg. The first two days were horrible. I stayed in bed because of the nausea, and I could not keep down liquids at all. Since, I have had slight nausea, but no vomiting. The most disturbing side-effect I have is a strange sort of insomnia. I have always had insomnia, but this is quite different. I find myself waking up very frequently due to the constant dreams. I am talking in my sleep, and I am aware of it. It is like I am stuck in "Twilight Sleep."

I HAVE BEEN PRESTIQ FOR 10 DAYS OR SO. I USED TO TAKE LEXAPRO. I AM OCASSIONALLY DIZZY AND I HAVE NOTICED MAJOR IRRITABILITY. I ALREADY SUFFER FROM ANXIETY AND TAKE TRAZADONE FOR SLEEP. I HAVE NOTICED I AM SLEEPY BUT MY SITUATION IS COMPLICATED SO I CAN'T ATTRIBUTE IT TO RESTIQ. I FELT FOR THE FIRST DAY OR 3 THAT, GEE I FEEL BETTER-LESS DEPRESSED. WELL THAT'S OVER. I AM MORE DEPRESSED THAN WHEN I WAS ON LEXAPRO.

I just started taking this med July 7. It is now July 9th. I skipped today because of the nausea, sleeplessness, fast heartbeat, and I can feel my blood pump through my veins. My dr told me to stick with it, but I have a job and two kids. I can not feel like this. I have just gotten my appetite back this evening. I do not recommend this med if you had a problem with Effexor, like I did. Effexor did me the same way 2 years ago.

I have been taking Prestiq for a couple of days and have had none of the side effects described here. Not nausea at all. I don't feel any response from it yet but it is too soon I'm sure. I just wanted to give another side, everyone is different.

My wife has been on many different Anti-Depressant drugs and has had to quit all of them because of side effects. She is very sensitive to all side effects even those in the rare catagory on the drug info sheet. She has been on Prestiq since July 2nd and has had only increased sleepiness. This is a good thing because she has not slept well for years. She is on 50mg. So far, it has worked wonders for her mood. After the first week she was like a different person. At this moment, I am impressed with how this drug has helped my wife and how it has changed her for the better. I wish the rest of you well.

A year & a half ago I was so depressed that I literally could not get out of bed in the morning. I had to get a medical leave from college I was so fatigued that I could not make it to class and would spend most of the day sleeping or crying. After a few antidepressants and a year later, my mood increased but I was still unable to shake the fatigue. I'm 20 years old and for the past 6 months haven't had the ability to make it to the bank or grocery store without having to muster all of my energy to get up and walk out the door. I've been on Pristiq for 2 weeks and I've never felt better. I get up early, I clean, I cook, I run errands, I call friends, I feel like I have a life again! When I read all of this stuff, I was shocked, because Pristiq has done wonders for me with NO side effects. I was previously on Cymbalta...and felt sick every single day, with no extra energy. But Pristiq has given me energy, motivation, drive, a happy mood, and all around better days!

I have been on the Lexapro/Wellbutrin cocktail for about 2 years now. I feel good on that for the most part, but there are times when I have no energy, dizzy, nauseated, etc. Plus, I have gained a great deal of weight (though my doctor said that it isn't the drugs). Today she suggested that I try Prestiq. I am just so confused as to what to do. I have decided for the time being to just go off of everything and see how I feel.

Today is my 5th day taking Prestiq. The 1st and 2nd days I had slight nausea, but also since the 1st day, I've gotten a boost of energy, an elevated mood, and a peacefulness about me that even my family notices! The only other medication I've had before this was Zoloft which was 4 years ago for a few months, but I didn't notice any change with it. I'm sorry to hear that Prestiq hasn't been so kind to everyone, but I know that the people it does work for will genuinely appreciate it!

I have been on Prestiq for just under three weeks now. I have noticed an increase in motivation, although it comes in spurts. I do worry about mood swings. I feel as though I snap in and instant, but so far I have been quick to divert myself and use the energy to clean or accomplish something. I started it while coming off Zoloft (have been off Zoloft four days now and minor side effect such as being dizzy).

I have been taking Prestiq now for 4 days and friends and family have noticed a huge chance in my mood and motivation to do things. I can tall a big difference in my energy as well. After the first day of taking it, I could tell a difference. I haven't had any problems at all with dizziness or any of the side effects stated in the packet I recieved when I got the prescription. I have been on 8 different anit depressants and this is the only one I have found to work!

This is my firt experience with any type of anti-depressant drug so I am new to the scene. My doctor prescribed Prestiq (50 mg). The first day was not fun at all. I felt like throwing up all day and a bit dizzy. This mostly went away on the second day and was gone on the 4th day.
Starting on the 3rd day, I found I had more energy and was mentally feeling better. Maybe this is a placebo effect? This euphoria wore off after about 1 week. It was actually a great feeling after being depressed.
After this feeling wore off, I noticed myself getting better almost instantly.
To me the side effects are a very small price to pay for getting my life back. I was diagnosed with Dysthymia, low grade depression so things might be different for me. I know I have a long road to getting better but I now have hope for the first time in MANY years.

I was using 100 mg of effexor and changed to 50 mg prestiq as soon as it was released as i was told it's basically effexor with an improved time release value. i, like the three others who made the switch from effexor with me, had the same reaction--the same amount of prestiq is needed as effexor, not less! The change from one drug to the other should also be gradual and overlap. The first few days I felt a little "spacey"/dizzy but that subsided and I am pleased with the results.

I've on on Prestiq for 6 weeks now. I feel great. I've lost 11 of the 41 lbs I put on while I was on Cymbalta. My energy level and concentration are much better. I feel normal again.

I just began taking Pristiq yesterday. I am also taking Lexapro30 mg. and zantax as needed. I had a hysterectomy a yer ago, and was doing great until last week, and then started going down hill fast. I began to be in a very dark place. I have two little boys and a woderful husband. I just couldn't get out of that funk! My GYN put me on estrate also for my hormones. Hopefully Pristiq will make all the difference. I am actually feeling less of that sufficating feeling today, but it's still lingering. I am a school teacher and have to go back to work Thursday, so, I pray that these meds will help!

Wish you all well too!

7 - 10 yrs ... has worked like a dream until the last couple of years. Doc says he wants me to switch to Prestiq.

I was wondering if anyone taking Prestiq is Bi-Polar???

I am, and I am concerned about mood swings, mania and additional depressive states.

ANY BI-POLARS OUT THERE TAKING PRESTIQ???

Hoping to hear from someone ... hopefully, with good results. I have heard that this is a good one for bi-polars.

I just started taking Pristiq this morning. After reading some of the posts in the beginning, I hesitated to take it. I HATE being neasous!! I had been taking Wellbutrin XL 300mg a day for 4 months (my PCP) prescribed it for me. However, it did nothing for my depression. I finally went to see a Psychiatrist who diagnosed me with severe depresssion and he switched me to the pristiq with xanax as needed. I am waiting for that miracle of motivation, energy, and a love for life again. I hope this pill does it for me. Will keep everyone posted.

Wow, day 1 was not so good on this Pristiq. Within 40 minutes of taking it, I was back in bed. I felt so neauous all day. Could not really eat anything but Saltine crackers. I am scared to take it again today but I guess I have to see if the side effect goes away like it did for some of you. I'll give it 3 or 4 more days. If the neausous feeling does not subside, goodbye Pristiq.

Depression:Let's see, yes depression it sucks. I am a 43 year old woman. I would say I have been depressed since my teenage years. I have tried just about every drug known to man. My doctor has been very good with me, trying to help me find something to help me. I really don't have any reason to be depressed, but as my depressed friends know, depression is a dark hole that you just can't seem to crawl out of. I have been taking Prestiq now for about 3 weeks, I did not experience nausia, but I couldn't keep my eyes open at work! So, I decided to take it before I go to bed, I still take a Restoril, sleep aid, and I am sleeping so much better, and I feel so much more at peace, I don't feel like the world is on my shoulders anymore. It seems to be working for me, but we are all different, just hang in there and hopefully every depressed person can find some drug that seems to work.

It's been 6 days since I started Pristiq. My diagnosis is severe depression and bi-polar. I'm still feeling nausea and I don't sleep well at night. During the morning hours I have no energy and start to fall asleep and I don't seem to have the motivation to really do anything. I need to give it my all to get basic house work done. I work at home and I have only been able to work for about 3-4 hours and I feel exhausted. The other symptom I have is headaches, however, I don't know if it's from Pristiq because I have not read anyone else having headaches. I'm on a trial for a month and I'll stick with it until then. I will post weekly updates.

I started Prestiq after a cocktail of other anti-depressants stopped working. I become suicidal, moody, and very withdrawn. Effexor was the previous anti-depressant, but it had attenuated. I hated Prestiq at first and had worse suicidal tendencies and depression. (I am on a relatively large dose of Prestiq). My psychiatrist adjusted the levels and now I am back. I did have several of the side effects, but they wore off as my body adjusted to it. At the current, I more energetic, less dark, and not contemplating suicide. I hope that Prestiq will help me control my psychiatric disorder.

I have been taking Prestiq for (4) months. I have missed 2 days/2 doses. Not by my doing, but because of a mix up with my doctor.

I am having some kind of side affect with my vision. It feels like I'm having a difficult time seeing normally. It isn't blurry or not causing dizziness. It makes me less alert and feels like my eyes are "seeing" frame to frame like viewing a photo passing by. Sensitive to light. It causes me to squint a little though not as extreme as when you have a migraine headache.

Can someone explain this or have any similiar experience of this? I would like to know what it is called so that I can let the drug companies know of this.

Thank you and good luck to all - you are not alone.

My doctor switched me from 150mg of Effexor to 50mg of Prestiq two weeks ago. I have had a headache on a few occasions, but not the other side effects. I feel "lighter" than when taking Effexor, more spontaneous and more like my old self--before the clinical depression started. Everyone reacts differently to antidepressants (Zoloft was a terrible drug for me). If the Effexor-type of drugs have benefited you in the past, I suggest you give your body a chance to get past the side-effect stage with Prestiq before you decide against it. The best thing you can have is a good doctor who understands antidepressants; most GPs do not, and pass on what the salesperson is hyping. I spent a long time in the black hole of depression and know the suffering that has to be endured. Don't give up.

I had been on Lexapro for more than a year when I experienced "poop out", a state where a drug doesn't continue to work as well as before. My Dr. changed me to Pristiq and it worked wonderfully. I take 50 mg a day and have for over two months. No side effects that I've experienced. Sorry everyone hasn't responded as well.

I am on my 6th day of Prestiq. It seems to be working fairly well. But I also just started back on Xanax so I'm not sure if one is helping more than the other. I've been on practically every antidepressant available and I am praying Prestiq will be a winner.

I'm on my second day of taking Prestiq, (I take it at night, actually), and so far so good. I don't feel the nausea that I've read about here, but I sure do feel loopy. Not a lot loopy, just a bit. I do have to say after having major depression peaking earlier this week, I feel a little better, not so desperate. I'm not sure this med would have such a quick result, or if it is a placebo affect, but I'm grateful to feel better.

DR. wants me to try prestiq to help deal with anxiety and panic attacks. I have had substance abuse issues so we both want to steer away from benzo's or anything that has the risk of addiction or misuse. Day 1 has been ok but I read some of the side effects can be increased heart rate, anxiety, and just that sense of panic! Anyone else taking this for anxiety? Im freaking out!! LOL And thats what we were trying to avioid!

Anonymous said...

On Prestiq for about 6 six weeks. Doing great. Drowsiness side effect wore off over the first 3 weeks. Used Nuerontin to help get passed some of the side effects one experiences when first taking a new anti-depressant - like increased anxiety. Hint: Don't go to your general practitioner for these drugs! Use a psychchiatrist. My GP put me on Lexapro. Terrible side effects - anxiety tripled. GP told me just to keep taking. My psychiatrist has a much better handle.

I have been taking Pristiq for 2 days now. My doctor switched me after taking Effexor for 11 years. This is supposed to be an improved version. He told me I could start it without waning from the Effexor. I think he was wrong as I am having withdrawal symptoms, I call them "head rushes", along with some physical twitchiness. I think I will try taking a low dose of Effexor and wean off it. Nice to know I am not alone, been dealing with depression for 40 years now. But proud to say I plug along and manage to function day to day. Good luck to everyone!

I have been on Prestiq for about 3 wks ... worked GREAT the 1st 2 wks. My Doc had me taper off Effexor ... GOOD IDEA ... it has been about 10 days since last Effexor. I felt a MAJOR downward slope after that. I am kind of up & down right now, more down that up unfortunately! I keep hoping that it will level off and I will feel like I did in the beginning ... which was great! Maybe I need to take a higher does?

Anyone out there taking more than 1 50 mg tablet???

Help!!!

I just started Perstiq on Monday after being on Effexor. I was on 400 mg of Effexor. My doctor switched me to Prestic at 50mg. I was ok for about 2 days and then began feeling withdrawal symptoms, internal dizziness, when I closed my eyes it was like having a fast electric shock feeling, irritated , withdrawn etc. I called my doctor yesterday and they told me that because of the dosage I was at with the effexor (400) that I was not getting enough of the Prestiq. So they told me to double it and start immediatly. Seemed ok until around 3 or 4 and still feel withdrawal symptoms. To be honest I felt much better than this on Effexor. The Prestiq seems to rip your energy, , make you irritable and just plain exhausted.
I guess I will call Monday to see if I can go up 50 more mg's. Sooner if this feeling does not shake.

Also. I was not gradually taken off the 400mg's of Effexor. I t was just immedioate switch to Prestiq..Not a good idea.

I have been on Prestiq for about three weeks and I sure can see an improvement in my energt level. I used to have a hard time just doing everyday chores. Even making the bed or running the sweeper was a nightmare! Now i find myself doing things constantly. My energy has returned. I also take Remeron and Seroquil,Ambien at night to sleep. I have very bad insomnia. But now I sleep fine. There is one thing that I have had for about the last 10 days and it is a sore tongue. It feels like it's on fire. And it happens mostly at night when I am sitting watching television. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't know whether it is from the Prestiq or not. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have been on this med for about a month now. Just started having problems with headaches - had my BP checked and it was extremely high. I am attributing it to this med since I have never had any problems with BP. I am 49 years old and in good health besides the depression/anxiety. I read the insert and this is called Serotin Syndrome - high BP and heart palpitations... Anyone else out there with this problem? I went to the MD today and he stoped it altogether since BP was 170/98!! Also have gained weight since starting this med.

I've been on Prestiq for four days and I have not had any of the side effects. I feel more motivated and more myself, like I used to be.
Zoloft turned me into a zombie on week three and Welbutrin pissed me off on day five. I mean I felt the need to over-react to morons.
I hope I can stay on it for now and as long as it works.

I have been taking Pristiq for a few months now, and I haven't had any side affects. I could say that I am much sleepier by the end of the day, but that is it. I have noticed a change in my overall mood and ability to not get as "stressed" out over the small stuff. That is a plus. I do plan to wean off of all anti depressants and go all natural by the new year. I definitely find this to be much better than zoloft.

Hi folks:
I started Prestiq about week ago. My big side effect is insomnia-which I never had before. Lots of energy in day though and don't feel tired. I am able to work full time as RN. I have been on antidepressants since 20's. Had been on Luvox for about 9 years and developed side effects that made me have to go off it. Please everyone that suffers from depression-don't give up! Takes alot of time to find right medication. Take care all.

Eight months ago I started taking Prestiq...
*Numbness in my right thigh occurs every few days or so now.
*Numbness in my left arm every few days or so.
*Depression worsening.
*Anxiety starting to increase.
*NO SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, but experiencing "death" nearing feelings. In other words, it feels like I'm going to die (we all are one day, that's not what I mean)... it's an intense feeling of disease (black, darkness) taking over the inside of the body; feels like I'm dying.

**Normally in my experience of these feelings from depression prior to this medication, I'd increase the dose of my medication or add another med to it. If not taken cared of, could lead to hospitialization. Detest going to the hospital.

Someone help! Living with depression now for over 15 years or longer...been on every medication imaginable...did ECT once...

I'm not sure (besides trusting in God) what to do next.

I have been on Prestiq for about 2 months now. I was diagnosed with depression 22 years ago. I too have been on just about every med there is for depression, anxiety and panic attacks. I also had over 25 Ect (electric shock) treatments. The only thing that they did for me was wipe out a substantial amout of my long term memory (like the birth of me kids) and it also rendered my short term memory useless.
I had high hopes for pristiq but those have been erased.
I feel more depressed. ( before I could not really cry I was so dead with my emotions) now I cry a lot.
I am 34 and since I have been on Pristiq I don't look at my life and say I have so much else to do in my life. Do things , see place, and stuff. But now I look at I don't have much time left in my life.
I was on effexor several times and at the beginning it seemed to work somewhat. But eventually the med would 'poop out'. That's my experience with almost all meds.
I feel envious of the people that Prestiq is working for. That is what my hopes were for me:o(
I am more irritable that's for sure.
I was also hoping for my sex drive to come back..it's been 8 years since I had a semblance of one. But again no help.
I've lost my focus with reading. I have always read a lot, but now I just can't seem to keep my focus. I have zero energy as well.
I guess I'll just have to wait for the next 'new drug' to come out.
I am happy for those of you who find prestiq working. With those of you who are suffering still...I am right there with you.

I have started to take Prestiq 50mg this week, I take it in the AM and by 1pm start to get drowsy. I just work through it. I wouldn't say the results are amazing, but there are some so I am going to give it some time.... It's too bad people are getting sick. Nothing is worse then trying something new and having it crap out on you. You try not to get excited at the chance of normality but you can't help it... I understand.

I have been on many meds for depression over the years-I am a
51 yr old male. I was on Lexapro before my Dr. put me on Prestiq.
Because he is a very qualified Dr. he changed my prescript
to Prestiq because he said it is a "cleaner med" it does not pass through the kidneys as Lexapro does... so consider that. As for the side effects, I notice nothing different than what Lexapro gave me, they both work well on treating my depression most of the time, however I have to say to all you having issues with this med or
any other you take for depression... therapy is a very important part of the equation for success! A family doctor cannot give you this, see a qualified Psychiatrist who can give you support and
help in identifying other issues in your life that attribute to your
depression,,, and most of all one who knows what these medications do and how they do it! To many MD's are prescribing
these meds like m&m's. Trust me I know the adverse effects depression plays in my life every day... but therapy in addition
to the meds helps me enormously. I hope this helps any of you
looking for a quick fix for your depression, I wish it were that easy.

thank you and good luck, don't give up

I have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and have been using many different anti-depressants over the years. I have experienced side effects with almost all of them, or they eventualy were no longer effective. My last drug has been effexor, which helped with depression, owever I could not stand the side effect of constantly sweating and being extremely sensitive to heat. I started last week on Prestiq after going off effexor for 2 weeks and crashing big time. I was suicidal for the first time n my life. So far Prestiq is working great. No side effects except a little nausea the first several days. I hope this continues. I have hope again.

i have been on 50mg for 4 weeks now and i love it. i've been on various different ssri's and antidepressants. i've been taking trileptol (6yrs)and welbutrin (2yrs). i've also tried celexa, paxil, prozac, and zoloft. i seemed to start going downhill with just the two: severe anxiety attacks, insomnia or a few days of nothing but sleeping, no appetite, no sex drive, claustrophobia, paranoia, severe fear of dying, constant shaking and crying, the phobias were never issues before. the others i have had since the death of my daughter in june of last year. of course experiencing that i was suicidal, which is not an issue now, but the depression was horrible. i've had issues with depression since i was a kid but this was one i'd never had, so the dr. wanted to try this new one. the first day i took prestiq i slept all day, probably recuperating, the next day i noticed a difference, not so much fear, a little appetite back and a little happier, as the days passed i notcied an increase in a positive mood and just felt better all together. i never had any of the symptoms the other people on this blog have had, but everyone is very different with reactions to any drug. i still have a little trouble falling asleep but that is it. my husband even likes it. he has noticed a major difference, and says i'm alot happier and seem to feel alot better than any of the others i had taken.i am curious to see how others are doing with it, especially with it being a new drug.

It's been over 8 months since I've started taking Prestiq and I'm so sad to say - "Another Med change"

I've been on every SSRI out there. Meds don't seem to last longer than 3 months... Yes, for 5 months I've been wasting my time on this med.

<<<< Calling all meds - where are you? >>>>>

Extreme dizziness now
Mood is definitely worse
(Snappy, fatigue, irritated, hopeless mentality)

Have a blessed week everyone. Keep trying - don't give up.

I am interested in TMS.

Just started taking 50mg of Prestiq along with 150 mg of wellbutrin 3 days ago. Feeling very fuzzy and foggy in the head. Slightly flushed as well. I've taken prozac, celexa, effexor and lamictil. I'm hoping this will be the right combination that will hold for a while. Celexa worked for me for about 5 years.

I have been on Prestiq for about 2 months now and the only discomfort I have experienced is the dizziness from the withdrawl of Effexor. I was on Effexor 150mg and went to Pristiq 50 mg. Funny thing-when I was withdrawing from the Effexor my sexual appetite went through the roof! My boyfriend was really happy! hahaha Now I have stabilized and have had no other side effects. I am very pleased.

I have been on Prestiq 50mg for about 4 months now. I have been on just about every type of anti-depressant out there and I still don't know how I feel about Prestiq compared to the others. It makes me sick every once and a while out of the blue. I still fell a little depressed and I still have a lot of anxiety!! I am not sure what to do because I do not think that there is anything else I can try, I guess I will just have to live with it. Hopefully it will get better but I doubt it.

I started on Prestiq this morning. I had nausea but it went away after I slammed a bowl of cereal. I will take it with food tomorrow. Hope that helps. I have been on several drugs for depression and anxiety over the years. I went off Lexapro in January and was doing fine until my daughter had to go to ER. She is now in the hospital getting treatment for major depression. She had not been sleeping and became psychotic. I hope she will be fine once they figure out her final diagnosis and get her on the right medications. She will be going to therapy regularly once she is home. This is, from my own experience, the best thing anyone can do. Followup care and therapy is what it takes. Good luck to all who suffer, there is a bright side. XOXOXO

I've been on Prestiq (50 mg) and the only thing I've had problems with is sleeping; however, I've always had this problem but I'm not sure if it's from the medication. I was on buspar for anxiety and that one made me sick to where I was in bed and was dizzy, nauseated, and tired.

TODAY IS DAY #2 ON PRESTIQ. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY NAUSEA, BUT I'VE ALWAYS HAD INSOMNIA, ALTHOUGH IT HASN'T WORSENED SINCE PRESTIQ. I'M EXCITED TO SEE IF THIS DRUG WORKS WELL FOR ME AND HOPEFULLY THE SIDE EFFECTS WON'T HIT ME!

I've been on Prestiq since Feb 2008. I've taken it at different times of the day.

The most noticeable change is that my depression is worsening.

Although, I suffer from insomnia, Prestiq seems to keep me up more often than to allow me to sleep, with an extreme level of restlessness... I begin to feel "panic" when I cannot fall asleep. Throughout the night I wake up at least 5 times more often than before. I sleep less hours and am so tired.

Prestiq has not worked at all for me, but for those of you who have been getting better... I'm happy for you.

My adventure continues to seek another medication that will help me with my depression.

God bless all of you. You are never alone - for the Lord loves you too much to let you go!

Today is day 1 for me on Pristiq. I have in the past been on Wellbutrin, Cymbalta, and Lexapro. My husband has been on Paxil for years and that stuff is evil.

I only read the patient information before taking my first dose and am now seeing these posts.

The first observation is I'm not falling asleep in my chair at work, it's been busy and I've been going along getting stuff done. Normally I can only stay awake about 3 hours before wanting to crawl back in bed for 10.

I'm not moody at all when dealing with people, I can't help but have a big smile on my face. I smile so little normally that everyone is noticing I'm "in a good mood"

No nausea at all, I have no appetite either, which hopefully will last as I could stand to lose some of the weight I've put on since the depression started 7 years ago.

I pray that everyone finds what works for them. I know this is only day 1 for me but so far so good.

I took my first dose of Pristig yesterday. I had a very restless night sleep last night and I'm jittery this morning and I feel like my eyes are going to bug out of my face. I'm going to give it a couple days but I have to say I feel more anxious today than I have before hopefully this feeling will go away soon. No nausea though.

1 DEC 2008. I had been on zoloft, didn't really help, used it for over a year, finally this. I noticed a change the first day. No bad symptons. I have been depressed for so long, going through a lot in my life, I'm 57 going on 20, look 30's. But was still fatique before taking this. It is FDA approved and that really lightened it up for me. I have tried about 4 different kinds. This seems to be the answer. Started out 50mg, 1 time a day while at the same time cutting down on zoloft. Now I am on Pristiq alone. It's great. Yes I do have energy and feel better mentally, mood enhancing, wanting to get back into exercises and eat better foods. Life is too short need to enjoy it no matter what age and if this is going to help, I am all for it. I am satisfied and hope to continually improve.

Hi Yall,
Today I started taking Prestiq 50 mg, I have taken an assortment of meds in the past, Lexapro, Cymbalta, Paxil, Celexa, Welburtin
all to no avail. I was anxious after reading literature regarding side effects but decided to give it a try, so I have began my month long trial optimistic and hopeful.
Good luck to all of you and keep trying to find a medication that works for you, will keep reading as everyones comments makes me feel reassured that there is help
Will keep writing regarding my experience with Prestiq

I have been taking LEXAPRO for 2 years for anxiety and depression. Over the last few months I have become depressed and wanting to constantly sleep. I called my DR and he switched me to Prestiq. After reading these comments I almost didn't take it. I had to go to work and have 2 small children. I can't be so nauseated that I'm unable to function. Well despite the comments I took my first pill yesterday. I had no side effects and performed better at work than I have for a while. I was a little tired but not like before. I slept ok and I noticed that when I took a nap and after sleeping at night I woke up less groggy than before. I had energy to get off the couch and clean, play with my kids, read to them, and do the things I used to do! Today is Day 2 and I still have no side effects. I hope that this is the drug for me and I hope many of you find relief as well :)

I have been taking Celexa (40 mg)for about 7 years give or take. It has kept me stabilized, but I would get full blown anxiety attacks every now and then and then feel extremely depressed. I recenlty started to cut my Celexa in half (20 mg) and have been doing so for about 2 months. Well on New Year's Eve I went to the E.R. with my mom because I could not control my anxiety attacks. I have been anxious and crying non-stop since. I went to my general doctor and he recommended and prescribed Pristiq. I am extremely skeptical about the whole thing. Does anyone suffer from heavy anxiety as well as depression? If so, has you anxiety calm down with Pristiq?? Any information would be so helpful.
Thanks~!!

With depression most people have sleep problems from not sleeping well to sleeping all the time. With each person side effects can vary. The medicine Prestiq has been given to people for a variety of reasons. If you read the FDA approval it is only to be given for severe deep depression. You know like the kind that the depression is worse than the side effects. I have been on Prestiq back in August, I was on it for 6 weeks. I had a remarkable improvement in my depression issues. Which were thoughts of death and uselessness. I had to come off due to my INS changed and the new one did not approve of my taking the medication until I tried others. So unless you are severely depressed, about to lose your life, do not take this medication. And always expect side effects with all medications. Which for this kind of depression the side effects are worth it. I want my life, I have a lot to live for. But my mind has a problem.

I have been on Pristiq for 6 days. No side effects. After the 2nd day, I began to feel like there was hope again. I have more energy, better concentration, postive feelings. I hope this is the wonder drug I've been waiting for. I've been on anti-depressants since 1976. Zoloft was great for many years in my late 30's (I'm 47 now)but stopped working. I've been on about 10 different ones since then, nothing works, Oh, I am also taking prozac along with the pristiq. I had been on prozac for 2 months alone with little results. Good luck to everyone. there is hope!

I have been taking Pristiq (50 mg) for 2 weeks now, having switched from Wellbutrin XL. Overall, my mood and outlook have improved, and I am more active, focused, and feeling less anxious than usual. Side effects I've experienced include: short bouts of increased anxiety during the first 2-3 days; insomnia during the first week; a slight feeling of nausea that quickly passes and is not bothersome to me; decreased appetite. Probably the biggest side effect is random waves of a very "druggie" exhausted feeling that can hit even after a great night's sleep. I feel that the improvements I'm feeling on Pristiq are worth the side effects, which I expect to fade eventually. Good luck to everyone!

I had been on 300mg Effexor for 2 years and it has worked well with the exception of some weight gain and elevated blood pressure. I took 150 Presiq and 150 Effexor the first week and felt okay. The next week, I dropped the Effexor and by the 3rd or 4th day I became increasingly irritable, withdrawn and more depressed. By the 5th day, my energy level was very low and I just felt like staying in bed. I switched back to the 300 Effexor and things went back to normal.

This medicine has less effect on seritonin I believe and more on noraphernephrine (spelling way off I know).

It is not simply an effexor replacement without the side effects.

I started pristiq 4 weeks ago and I have never been on any kind of anti-depressant before. I had all the bad side effects for almost 2 weeks but stuck it out and now feel much better...in fact better than I have felt in 2 years. I wish everyone could have the same results I have had. I had to take it in the afternoon so I could work without being sleepy.

I just had to stop taking Prestiq about a week ago because I was having suicidal thoughts. I have been on the drug for about 2 months. I became more depressed as i continued to take it and everyone noticed it. I finally stopped taking the drug after intense suicidal hallucinations. Like i said, I have been off of the drug for about a week and I am still having the thoughts. I was not suicidal before and i would never act upon these thoughts, however they are still occuring. I am 19 years old and have also been experiencing massive panic attacks. I do not suggest taking this drug.

Have tried in two segments of time (separated by 2 years) Lexapro and Wellbutrin. Lexapro made made me feel out of control. I took myself off and increased counseling hours. Wellbutrin made border-line insane, violent, nothing like myself. Gave up on anti-depressants until now. I tend to freak when I "feel" something working.
Started Prestiq yesterday. Very restless, heart palpitations, feeling a bit disconnected, yawn a lot, not much concentration. This comes in waves...NOT GIVING UP THIS TIME...going to fight through it...wait at least a month and see the "true" "real" results.
Stick it out guys!!!
We're all in this together.
I'm in my 20s and teach high school...this is hard. But I'm a fighter!

I have been on Prestiq for three weeks and decided to stop it today. I had been on Lexapro for 3 years before experiencing "poop out" I have general anxiety disorder. Prestiq has made me EXTREMELY irritable and causes me to snap at anything. I have extreme bouts of anxiety and missed several days of work. I am afraid to be alone and can't sleep at night. I am up every 2 hours. I hate the way I feel and can't take one more day of this.Side effects included abdominal pain, sweats, chills, EXTREME ANXIETY, Depression, irritability and a general loss of control. Proceed with caution on this drug. Good luck to everyone. I now know what depression feels like and its not good.

I am one of the positive ones here. I have in the past been on Welbutrin which did very little. Paxil which made my heart pound constantly, hated that. And one other...can't remember. After asking my doc for more help, med adjustment or anything, she said to me, "what do you want me to do, drug you till you're numb?" I was floored she wouldn't offer any help. So I went off cold turkey. After a year trying life without anything, I felt like I was falling in a deep pit again, crying depression and overwhelmed by everything. Went to a different doc in the same office who suggested Prestiq (50) and Xanax. I was also taking 2 meds he prescribed for sinus problems. I spent the first 3 whole days sleeping, no appetite at all. but no nausea. So not sure if sleepy from the sinus meds or the others. Anyway,I have now been on the Prestiq and Xanax for 3 weeks and feel like a new person. I take the Prestiq at night because I thought it was making me sleepy during the day. But I am so much happier, able to laugh easily, life is not overwhelming to me. One side effect I see, not sure which med might be causing it, is vivid troubling dreams about fires, car crashes, shootings. Those type of things are foreign in my life so I don't know where that is coming from except the meds. But a small price to pay for as well as I'm feeling! I really advise people to not base your reaction on people who say they've taken it 2 days or even a week and want to give up. Hang in there and give it a chance. I wish everyone the best. It's no cake walk being in the pit, I've been there and happy to find a doc who was understanding and working with me.

My 8 year old son began taking Prestiq four days ago. He is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and ADHD. Prior he tried two different meds used primarily for ADHD (Adderal and Concerta) with no improvement in ADHD and worsening anxiety. This is the first "anti-anxiety" med he has tried. He is only taking 1/4 of a 50 mg. tablet and then 1/2 of 50 mg. tablet next week. So far he is not complaining of side effects. I will post again after two weeks.

I am bi-polar and am taking lots of medication. I've recently changed from Cymbalta to Prestiq. I've been on it for about 9 days. I am very dizzy but the worst thing is that I started having migraines. My psychiatrist is out of town for two weeks so I'm really suffering but I don't want to stop it before he comes back because maybe the side effects will go away. Also I'm having night sweats and very weird dreams. So I'll find out in about another week when my phychiatrist comes back. I'm anxiously waiting.

I have been taking presiq 50mg for almost a month. No anti-depression drugs taken before (not that I didn't need it). I am not nauseated but always sleepy. It seams as though all I do is work and sleep. I can't take prestiq too late in the day or it will increase my sleepiness the next day significantly. I am not depressed, I don't think but I do feel better.

Someone had mentioned, after being off Prestiq for only 2 days, a feeling of blurry vision...I can't put a finger on how to explain what I am feeling, it's almost disoriented. Like if you were to move your head too fast, the visions come later...I've also been off for just a couple days.
I am thinking of stopping completely, fluoxotine (generic of Prozac)did not have this side affect if I didn't take it for a couple days.

After being on celexa for over 10 years,(it just stopped working and all I felt was exhausted) I tapered off just like doc said. I went thru horrible withdrawal, the first few weeks were just brain shocks,(hard to explain) I had more energy but was very irritable. then came a meltdown with flu symptoms, pain in my whole body, extreme anxiety, NO sleeping, nightsweats, just hell. my doctor put me on ambien to help me sleep which added to the daytime problems. I slept well but by noon my skin felt like bugs were crawling on me and I was out of whack. I felt like something in my brain was not connecting. I don't know how my husband took all of this. I really thought I had the flu with withdrawal symptoms. I stopped the ambien after 3 weeks very hard! My doctor put me on remeron, this was a nightmare. my legs and arms were moving while I was trying to sleep for almost 9 hours. I finally fell asleep and slept for almost 12 hours. After this I tried prestiq. this is my 2nd day my mind is clear, I am tired and a little sleepy but I feel so much better. I am hoping and praying that this drug will be the answer for me to have a normal life. I feel for all of you who are going thru this hell of trying new drugs, switching back and forth. Hang in there with me. I am feeling much hope!!

I just started Prestiq also, and I've been very tired. Not only that, but I feel really forgetful. My mind's kind of cloudy and I can't exactly focus, but that might be because I'm currently being weened off Lexapro, onto Prestiq.

I've been on Prestiq for almost two months. I started on 50mg. That didn't cut it. Currently taking 100mg, and I feel that it's working for the depression. HOWEVER,my anxiety is still through the roof.

I also take 30mg Adderall with my Pristiq. One morning, I ran out of my Adderall,so I took my Prestiq alone. I slept for almost 12 hours straight. That was after a good night sleep.

I wonder if the lack of appetite is causeing some of these side effects that some people are experiencing.

I do not eat anything all day, but I make up for it at night when the miedicine has worn off.

I am going to try to eat and drink during the day to see if I have better absorbtion.

Just a thought. Although it's not easy to eat when I'm just not hungry.

Don't worry. I'm not anorexic. I have a few poiunds to spare. :)

Best of luck to those of you who are experiencing difficulty.

Tried Them All said...

Just for the record, I've tried almost every anti-depressant on the market.
Buspar(for anxiety)-no results.

Lexapro(10mg)-good results, but too much weight gain.

Prozac-mood was okay, but distant with everyone, even my boyfriend, lost weight, no appetite.

Paxil-great results, but I ran out one day. Being lazy, I didn't get my perscription filled, and I went through THE WORST withdrawls that I wouldn't even wish on my worst enemy. I was in fetal position, sweating, shaking, terrible body aches. Could have sworn that I had the flu. I thought I was going to die. Went to the doctor. They ran all kinds of test, including checking for the flu and strep. Nothing. Just withdrawls. Loved Paxil, but too afraid to run out again.

Wellbutrin-no really bad side effects. No really great results either.

Effexor-lose of appetite, felt vibrations in my head, helped a little for the anxiety, but still needed Alprozalam.

Pristiq-althought I feel that it is not helping my anxiety, it may be the Adderall that is causing my anxiety, too.

The only complaint I really have is the sexual side effect. I don't have any drive, and I can't have an .... You know?.

Other than that, it's okay. Depression is defenitaly under control.

I took Prestiq for about 3 weeks. I had been on Paxil for several years but had to get off before getting pregnant. The Prestiq helped somewhat with the anxiety but had me hyperventilating and had my heart racing. I think it is the additional ingredient it has over Paxil. Back of Pexeva (a newer form of Paxil) and the side effects of Prestiq are slowly starting to fade. And by the way, I did not have any of those awful withdrawals symptoms coming off of Paxil

I have Schizoaffective Disorder w Borderline Personality traits. I'm on Seroquel, Depakote, Klonopin, and Remeron(again)I was taking Remeron 45 mg which is the max dose for depression. I didn't feel it working, so my psychiatrist prescribed Prestiq(50mg)I've been taking it since May and I noticed I have really strange dreams, and I sweat ALOT. I feel anxious and nervous. After starting to lose too much weight, my doctor started me back up on Remeron on the lowest dose to increase my appetite(which was almost next to none)and so I could sleep better. I seem to be sleeping better but the sweating is horrible. I feel chills, and like something prickly on my skin. I don't like it. And quite frankly, I think it's not for me. I'm doing a whole LOT better. At least I tried it but now I know it's not for me. I'm happy for all of those who are taking it and is working for them.

I am a 42 year old woman. I took Prestiq for about 2 months, I noticed different side effects but did not contribute them to the medicine. I had never had thoughts of wanting to die, I started having these feelings, I was very edgy, got angry over everything, and had severe brusing issues. I went to a different dr, who informed me that I was having an allergic reaction to the medicine, took me off put me on prozac. I am doing just fine with it.
My husband was put on Prestiq, for depression. He was on the medicine for about one month. He committed suicide.
I would not recommend this medicine for anyone.

I have been taking Pristiq now for 3 months. I have enjoyed feeling "me" again. I am able to concentrate more on my kids and not sweat the small stuff. My husband and I act like newlyweds again. When I first started taking it, I had the nausea and shaky hands but lately, the loss of energy has been incredible. The WILD dreams that I have been having are Grammy worthy! I wonder if Stephen King takes Pristiq? I have noticed an increase in headaches and blurred vision. I think that it is super strange that after 2 FULL months of taking this medication I am just now having these side effects. Has anyone else experienced this? This is also my first anti-depressant I have been on.

I don't know if it's just me or if perhaps everyone else encountering problems with your
website. It appears like some of the written text
within your posts are running off the screen. Can somebody else please comment
and let me know if this is happening to them as well? This might be a issue with my browser because I've had this happen before. Many thanks

Hmm it appears like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess
I'll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I too am an aspiring blog writer but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips and hints for inexperienced blog writers? I'd definitely appreciate it.
